Can Insta 360 Go 2 Match Up To GoPro? Here's My Pick

Insta 360 has launched it’s latest world’s smallest action camera – GO 2!

I actually don’t own either, but have been eyeing the original GO for the past year. So this launch of GO 2 is the perfect excuse for me to get it!

But wait, should I get Insta 360 Go 2 or the latest Hero 9 from GoPro?

Now, I’m not an action sports person, but what I really like about both cameras are that they’re small and portable! And that will be great for vlogging from a first person’s point of view, taking B-rolls in tight and unique places, while on the move, and being discreet too!

My criteria is pretty simple

  1. Lightweight and small. Cause my everyday bag of stuff is already heavy enough.
  2. Good quality video.
  3. Long battery life.

Alright! Let’s summarise my research here!

1. Weight

Insta 360 Go 2 : 26.5g without case / 89g with case

GoPro Hero 9 : 160g

Winner : Insta 360 Go 2

2. Size

Well, just look at it. JUST LOOK AT IT. Hero9 is actually already very small, but what a stark difference compared to the Go 2!

Winner : Insta 360 Go 2

3. Video Quality / Resolution

Speaking in tech language, video quality has to do with camera resolution.

Insta 360 Go 2 : up to 2.5K or 1440p, at 50fps

GoPro Hero 9 : up to 5k, 30fps

To see what that looks like, here’s a screenshot from AuthenTech – Ben Schmanke again.

Ben did mention that the Hero9’s video looks sharper than Go 2. But honestly, as a lay person, they look the same to me!

However, the Go 2’s colour looks quite washed out (see his face), wheres the Hero 9 gave him some colour and not make him look pale and ill.

But! I like that Go 2 has a wider field of view, allowing me to capture more background. And if I want my head to take up most of the frame space, I can always just move the camera closer to me (less strenuous too. Hmm, but then again, it’s only barely 27g.)

Winners :

Sharpness : Hero 9, but for my youtube usage, it’s really not going to make a huge difference. So I’m calling it a draw.

Colour : Hero 9

Field of View : Go 2

4. Recording Time

Insta 360 Go 2 : up to 30 minutes without case / 2.5 hours with case

GoPro Hero 9 : up to 3 hours

Winner : GoPro Hero 9

5. Sensor

This is a bit technical/ cheem. Generally speaking, the larger the sensor, the better quality image it can produce.

Insta 360 Go 2 : 1/2.3” sensor with a f2.2 lens

GoPro Hero 9 : 1/2.3” sensor with a f2.2 lens. Same!

Winner : Draw

6. Audio Quality

Insta 360 Go 2 : sounds a tad flat, picks up a lot of ambient sounds

GoPro Hero 9 : sounds fuller, picks up less ambient sounds

Winner : GoPro Hero 9

7. Stabilisation

Insta 360 Go 2 : super stable!

GoPro Hero 9 : super stable too. but I kinda prefer looking at the Go 2

Winner : Draw. But I’m leaning towards Insta 360 Go 2

8. Other Cool Features

Insta 360 Go 2 :

a) Horizon lock – inbuilt. keeps your video upright no matter how you turn the camera, even if it’s upside down!

b) Comes with 3 mounts: magnetic pendant, pivot stand tripod, easy clip

GoPro Hero 9 :

a) Horizon lock – requires external lens sold seprately

b) Mounts and accessories sold separately

Winner : Insta 360 Go 2

9. Price

Insta 360 Go 2 : USD 299 (Shipping within United States) / USD 338 (Shipping to Singapore)

GoPro Hero 9 : USD 350

Winner : Insta 360 Go 2

Alrighty. So who’s my overall winner?

Insta 360 Go 2!

I’ve ordered my Insta 360 Go 2 already.
